Meet Ambassador Matt Grant, world envoy for the pasty

Like the pasty warmly enfolds turnip, onion, potato, and minced beef, Matt Grant has been warmly enfolded by the community of pasty makers.

Grant runs the Great British Pasty & Pie Company in Arnprior, Ont. The English expat has only been making pasties for a few years now. But he’s good at it. So good that, last year, he travelled to Cornwall, England, to compete in the World Pasty Championships. After finishing fourth in 2015, Grant vowed to return — a move which just paid off in a big way.

“I was just blown away to be named the ambassador this year,” Grant tells As It Happens guest host Helen Mann.”The award has never been given to a Canadian before, so that’s a first.”

Matt Grant of The Great British Pasty and Pie Co. based in Ottawa, Canada, claimed the coveted Pasty Ambassador prize. Matt travelled more than 3,000 miles to compete for the second year running at the World Pasty Championships, leaving behind minus 30-degree temperatures to compete in the Cornish sunshine.

Matt said: “It’s unbelievable to be named the Pasty Ambassador. It’s a very proud moment. I’ll definitely come back next year, I love the people, everyone’s so nice and there’s a great community around pasties.”

What: A complete Christmas dinner in one savoury pastry packet, including oven-roasted turkey, gravy, potatoes and homemade stuffing studded with Upper Canada cranberries.

Why: “I started making these for Christmas last year, and once people tasted them, they didn’t last very long,” says Arnprior’s Matt Grant, who started The Great British Pasty & Pie Co., two years ago, using Ottawa-area ingredients to make Cornish-style pasties. “Already this year I’ve sold 200 to 300 each market weekend.”

The Bird. Oh lordie, the bird! Have you ordered a fresh, local, pink-and-plump, contented-till-the-day-it-met-its-Maker variety bird? Or will you head to the supermarket and buy a ‘butter’ basted frozen rock of a beast with a wing tip missing?

Rather depends on your budget and your beliefs, but this story isn’t about that. This is about avoiding the whole turkey thing — the ordering, queuing, collecting and lugging home, stuffing, trussing, roasting, (Is it done, good God is it done? How do I tell if it’s done?) making gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry jelly… Just how many years now have you been doing the damn Turkey Dinner my friend? Quite right. Too many.
